Getting a piercing can be a fun way to make a statement and add a little more bling to your look – and there are now so many places on the body you can bedazzle.
But if you’re thinking about getting your belly button pierced, one woman has shared some food for thought.
A mum named Melinda Strauss has gone viral on TikTok after warning women about the “terrifying” impact pregnancy can have on belly button piercings – though she adds that it doesn’t always happen to everyone.
In a post on the video-sharing platform, Melinda from Long Island, New York, responds to the question: “What’s a mistake you learned the hard way that you can now help others avoid?”
She says: “Don’t get a belly button piercing.
“I know they’re cute, they’re fun and you can accessorise, but don’t do it unless you’re never planning to have kids, then go for it.
“Because see what happens is you get the belly button ring and then you get pregnant and some people keep it in but it always scared me, and then your belly stretches.
“The belly gets really really big and so does the hole from the belly button ring and then everything deflates after you have the baby and the hole from the belly button ring, it doesn’t just go back to the way that it was, it becomes like a second belly button and that’s not cute.
“I’ve actually had mine fixed so I cannot show you what it looks like, not that I would anyway as it was pretty terrifying.
“I had a regular belly button and then I had a second belly button.”
Melinda’s video has since gone viral, garnering more than 840,000 likes and thousands of comments.
One person said: “Every day the list keeps growing on why I shouldn’t have kids.”
Another replied: “WHAT I GOT MINE PIERCED A WEEK AGO.”
A third wrote: “Thank you for reminding me how much I don’t want to get pregnant.”
However, some rightly pointed out that this wouldn’t be the case for everyone’s belly button.
A different user posted: “Anyone freaked out, it doesn’t happen to everyone. I got pregnant, took it out while I was, then when my stomach went back to normal it did too.”
Someone else added: “I wish y’all would stop scaring people with stuff like this. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN TO EVERYONE. Just the unlucky lol.”
